Bethungra Spiral
Location: Main Southern railway, Bethungra, NSW 2590
|
This section of railway on the Sydney to Melbourne line is an engineering feat constructed in the 1940s to allow rail engines to negotiate the steep slope. The Bethungra Spiral goes through two tunnels and over the top of the hill through a deep cutting at the spur. This is the only example of a 360 degree railway spiral in Australia.
