Location: Illawarra railway, Austinmer, NSW 2515
|
Set between beautiful blue waters with golden sand and the dramatic, forested mountains, Austinmer is a destination in itself, made all the more special when you arrive by train. Built in 1887, the Railway Station is of a simple timber design, in keeping with the casual beach atmosphere of the town.

Physical Description
GROUNDS
The listing boundary is the SRA property boundaries to each side of the platforms for their full extent including the two station buildings, at the south end extending to include the area around the road bridge and at the north to a distance of 5 metres beyond the end of the platform.
BUILDINGS
station buildings
- type 11, timber initial island, 1915
- type 11, timber ,1915
STRUCTURES
platform faces - brick level raised in 1985
road bridge, brick abutments, curved concrete arch, 1915 (SRA).
Simple timber railway platform buildings, corrugated metal roofs (LEP).
The two station buildings are standard timber buildings with gable roofs and cantilevered awnings to the platform side supported on curved steel brackets resting on timber corbels. The down building contains a waiting room, station masters office, parcels room and the up building contains a waiting room, station masters office and booking office on the end of the gable and parcels office. This building has a small skillion roof covering the booking window. The position of the booking office off the platform is halfway between the earlier on platform facilities but entry to the buildings is still via the platform and there is no central or significant entry to either building.
PLATFORM FACES: The brick platform faces date from the time of duplication and apart from raising the height for modern practice retains its early form and adds to the completeness of the site.
ROADBRIDGE: This is included in the listing, although not railway property, because it adds to the completeness of the group and setting and is highly representative of many such arrangements with a curved brick and concrete road bridge at one end of a station group throughout the state, most of which have now been removed as road technology has improved and they have been superceded. This is an excellent surviving example and illustrates how the road bridge removed the need to provide separate pedestrian access between platforms.
NTA (NSW) LISTING BOUNDARY: The listing boundary is the platforms for their full extent including the two station buildings and at the south end extending to include the area around the road bridge.
