History
In 1889, following a parliamentary revolt against Premier Sir Henry Parkes’ arrogant use of power, the newly appointed railway Commissioner travelled throughout the colony and investigated all proposals for new lines. A recommendation to built a railway from Marrickville to Burwood Road was finally approved by Parliament the following year. Construction did not commence for another tow years, owing to a financial crisis in the colony partly caused by the heavy borrowing from Britain to pay the expansion of the railways.
The terminus station at Burwood Road was originally to be named St George, as that was the common name for the area as the time. After objections from people on the Illawarra line, it was changed to Belmore, in honour of the Earl of Belmore, Governor New South Wales between 1868 and 1872.
In the 1930s a wooden structure was built at the top of the steps fronting onto the down side of Burwood Road to take the ticket selling and parcel functions. The change was also made to most other stations built to a similar configuration. The station master’s office remained in the platform building for another forty years, but this function too has moved to the street level building.
